Arcane Gazebo has moved! Update your bookmarks!

I'm pleased to announce that Arcane Gazebo has moved to http://arcanegazebo.net. The new server should be faster and more stable. All the archived posts have been transferred to the new site (except this one) and comments are open there. (We'll...

The new blog location, and the fate of the LiveJournal feed
The main Arcane Gazebo blog has moved to http://arcanegazebo.net. If you click to one of the inverse posts listed in this journal and want to post a comment, you have to go to the new site to do it.

The new server doesn't have the plug-in that reposts the RSS feed to LiveJournal. I think a better solution is to set it up as a LiveJournal syndicated feed. I would set this up myself but I don't have a paid LJ account; however, I know a few of you are paid users, so if someone wants to set it up, go ahead and let me know so I can publicize it. The RSS feed is located at http://www.arcanegazebo.net/index.xml and of course those of you who like straight RSS can use that instead of a LJ feed.

French Combat Soccer

I didn't watch any of the soccer game today, but Yglesias is right: that headbutt is awesome. Obviously I should have watched the game so I could have seen that moment. (This is obvious filler while I finish getting the...

Style/Layout Request Thread

I'm working on the templates and stylesheet for the new incarnation of the site. So far I've just been duplicating the current look, but post a comment here if there's something I should change to make the blog more readable...

Highlights [Open Thread]

I saw the last two minutes of the Italy-Germany game, which turned out to be a very efficient use of my time. In other news, the network outages plaguing this site may be easily fixable, but the database crashes are...

Independence Day

I've seen this on a couple blogs already, but it's so good I want to repost it. Frederick Douglass in 1852: What to the American slave is your Fourth of July? I answer, a day that reveals to him, more...

Weirdness and the outsider in Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town

Weirdness and the outsider in Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town

My intention for the short capsule book reviews in the open threads is simply to say whether or not I liked the book in question. For Cory Doctorow's novel Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town, I wanted to comment...

Why I love Berkeley

Why I love Berkeley

Sure, this is completely futile, but that's part of the charm: With overwhelming support from Berkeley residents, the Berkeley City Council unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday night to be the first jurisdiction in the United States to let the public...

Personal Advice from the Internet

Personal Advice from the Internet

I had been debating whether to fly out to Connecticut this summer to visit friends, and if I do so, whether to take some extra time to tour New York City. Fortunately the internet came to the rescue with a...

Sleater-Kinney retire

Sleater-Kinney retire

Or rather, go on "indefinite hiatus". As I've mentioned before, this was the band that got me into indie rock, so it's especially sad news. I'm now really glad I decided to see them instead of Bloc Party at Coachella....

Emigration [Open Thread]

This completes my backlog of books to review, so now I need to read some more. Fortunately, there are a number of intriguing suggestions left from the summer reading thread... Cory Doctorow: Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town: I...

Nomenclature of the godless [corrected]

Nomenclature of the godless [corrected]

There's been some recent discussion on various blogs of the notion that the term "Brights" be used to describe atheists, agnostics, etc. This was coined by Daniel Dennett Paul Geisert and Mynga Futrell, and promoted by Daniel Dennett and Richard...

I was already kicking myself for missing Built To Spill's three San Francisco shows last weekend, only remembering to check for tickets once they had all sold out. Then Saturday night I stopped by the lab to change some batteries,...

Friday Random 10: Dangerzone ahead

I'm trying out Google Reader after having used Sage for a while now. I like reading blogs by RSS but I have a strict list of requirements for an RSS reader: It must run in Firefox. That's it. I've tried...

Books that resonate

After I wrote my review of Norwegian Wood it occurred to me that I could extend it to a discussion thread. We've already discussed Great American Novels, but for this one put questions of literary merit aside (as well as...

But where's "November Rain"?

Pitchfork hits YouTube and comes back with 100 Awesome Music Videos. Well, some of them are awesome and some are "awesome" (David Hasselhoff covering "Hooked on a Feeling", for example). I watched "To Here Knows When" (My Bloody Valentine) and...

Strongly recommended [Open Thread]

I spent the weekend with a mild cold, which still persists. The worst part isn't the physical symptoms, but the sense that my brain is fogged up, which led to an interesting series of careless mistakes in the lab yesterday....
